If you are curious about homeopathy and interested in discovering natural alternatives for managing your high blood pressure, stay tuned. This article will explore the use of homeopathic remedies that can be used to manage high blood pressure.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, denotes abnormally high arterial pressure. Medically, hypertension refers to high blood pressure, regardless of its underlying cause. The term hypertension can also indicate an intensity of an emotional state, nervousness, or stress. Hypertension may not display any symptoms for years.

Hypertension is commonly referred to as the “silent killer” due to its absence of symptoms. High blood pressure that is undiagnosed and uncontrolled elevates the risk of several serious problems, including stroke, aneurysm, heart failure, heart attack, and kidney damage. High blood pressure is defined by an average systolic pressure at rest of 140 mm Hg or higher, an average diastolic pressure at rest of 90 mm Hg or higher, or both. In most individuals with high blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic pressures are elevated.

Blood pressure is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system and the kidneys. When the body responds to a threat, known as the fight-or-flight response, the sympathetic nervous system triggers the release of the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline from the adrenal glands. These hormones cause the heart to beat with greater force and at a faster pace, while they constrict most arterioles and dilate some in areas where an increased blood supply is needed, such as skeletal muscle. The arterioles that undergo dilation are those in areas where increased blood supply is needed, like the muscles that are consciously-controlled, such as the skeletal muscles.

The sympathetic nervous system additionally activates the kidneys to reduce the excretion of salt and water, therefore elevating the blood volume. The kidneys directly respond to changes in blood pressure. When blood pressure increases, the kidneys excrete more salt and water to decrease blood volume and return blood pressure to normal.

Alternatively, when blood pressure decreases, the kidneys excrete less salt and water, causing an increase in blood volume and returning blood pressure to normal. The kidneys can raise blood pressure through the secretion of renin which leads to the eventual production of angiotensin II hormone. Angiotensin II causes arterioles to constrict and triggers the release of aldosterone hormone which causes the kidneys to retain more salt and water, ultimately increasing the blood pressure.

Primary or essential hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure without a known cause. About 90% of people with high blood pressure have primary hypertension. Many changes in the heart and blood vessels are likely to combine and lead to an increase in blood pressure.

Although the reasons for these changes are not fully understood, they seem to involve an inherited abnormality that affects the constriction of arterioles responsible for controlling blood pressure. Hypertension with a known cause is referred to as secondary hypertension. Around 10% of individuals with hypertension suffer from secondary hypertension.

The kidneys play a significant role in regulating blood pressure, and many kidney disorders can cause hypertension. Kidney damage may lead to a reduced ability of the kidneys to eliminate sufficient salt and water from the body, causing blood volume and blood pressure to rise. Around 5% to 10% of individuals with hypertension suffer from a kidney disorder as the underlying cause. These conditions may include renal artery stenosis, which is narrowing of the artery supplying one of the kidneys; kidney inflammation; and kidney injury.

Small percent of cases of hypertension are due to another underlying disorder, such as a hormonal disorder, or the use of certain drugs like oral contraceptives. Hormonal disorders, such as Cushing’s syndrome characterized by high levels of cortisol, can lead to high blood pressure. Hyperthyroidism, overproduction of aldosterone, often due to a tumor in one of the adrenal glands, and, rarely, a tumor located in an adrenal gland and producing hormones such as adrenaline or noradrenaline, can also cause high blood pressure.

Arteriosclerosis can interfere with the body’s ability to control blood pressure, increasing the risk of developing high blood pressure. Arteriosclerosis causes stiffness in the arteries, preventing them from dilating and returning the blood pressure to normal levels.

Here are some examples of homeopathic remedies that can be used in the treatment of high blood pressure.
